Marble is a metamorphic stone formed when limestone recrystallizes under heat and pressure. Composed primarily of calcium carbonate, marble rates 3-5 on the Mohs hardness scale—softer than granite or quartzite. This composition makes marble susceptible to etching from acidic substances (citrus, wine, vinegar) through a chemical reaction that occurs on contact—no sealant can prevent surface etching. However, marble's timeless beauty and unique veining patterns make it the material of choice for discerning clients who embrace its living patina.
Care: Seal every 6-12 months to resist staining (note: sealing does not prevent etching). Wipe spills immediately, especially acidic substances. Clean with pH-neutral stone cleaner only—never vinegar or citrus-based products. Consider a honed finish for kitchens to minimize visible etching. Embrace the patina that develops with use.
