Pre-Installation Preparation (The Day Before)

Successful installation begins with proper preparation 24 hours in advance. Your plumber should disconnect all sinks, faucets, and dishwasher connections the day before installation—our crew arrives ready to install countertops, not to handle plumbing disconnections. Clear all items from countertops and cabinets below the installation area; while we protect cabinet interiors with drop cloths, removing contents prevents accidental damage and allows faster work. Remove small appliances, decorative items, and anything stored on or near countertops. If your refrigerator requires moving to access countertops, ensure the path is clear. For homes with pets, arrange alternative accommodation for installation day—open doors, power tools, and multiple crew members create opportunities for escape, and stone dust can irritate sensitive respiratory systems. If you have valuable or fragile items displayed in the kitchen, relocate them to prevent accidental damage from vibration or movement. Cover or remove window treatments near work areas, as stone dust can settle on fabrics. Verify that someone 18 or older will be home throughout installation—we cannot work in unoccupied homes due to liability concerns. Finally, confirm that your garbage disposal has been disconnected if present; this is often overlooked and can delay installation start.

Morning: Crew Arrival and Setup (8:00-9:00 AM)

Our installation crews typically arrive between 8:00-9:00 AM, depending on your location in Palm Beach County and the project schedule. The crew will consist of 2-4 installers depending on project complexity and material weight—quartzite and granite require more personnel than lighter quartz or porcelain. Upon arrival, the lead installer will introduce the team and conduct a brief walkthrough to confirm details: countertop layout, sink and cooktop placements, and any last-minute questions or concerns. This is your opportunity to address specific requirements or preferences before work begins. The crew will then unload your countertops from the installation truck using specialized carrying equipment—A-frames, suction cups, and straps designed for heavy stone slabs. Don't be alarmed by the number of people moving materials; proper stone handling requires multiple carriers to prevent damage and injury. Setup involves laying protective materials (ram board, carpet protection film, and drop cloths) along the path from truck to kitchen, protecting your floors and doorways from heavy traffic. The crew will also set up work stations with tools, adhesives, and equipment. This preparation phase typically takes 30-45 minutes before actual installation begins.

Mid-Morning: Demolition and Cabinet Preparation (9:00-10:30 AM)

If your project includes removal of existing countertops, this phase happens first. Laminate counters come out quickly (30-60 minutes), while existing stone takes longer due to weight and attachment methods (60-90 minutes). The crew will cut stone into manageable sections for safe removal, which generates noise and some dust despite our efforts to contain it. Expect loud power tools intermittently—reciprocating saws, grinders, and occasionally hammers for stubborn installations. Once old counters are removed, the crew inspects cabinet condition and prepares for new installation. This includes checking for level (critical for preventing cracked stone), reinforcing cabinets if needed, adding support structures for overhangs, and cleaning surfaces where new countertops will rest. For properties throughout Boca Raton and Delray Beach, we occasionally discover unexpected issues during this phase: water damage requiring cabinet repair, unlevel surfaces needing shimming, or outdated plumbing that should be updated. Minor issues are addressed immediately, but significant problems may require pausing installation to bring in additional trades—your project manager will discuss timeline and cost implications before proceeding. Assuming no major surprises, cabinet preparation takes 30-60 minutes depending on kitchen size.

Late Morning to Early Afternoon: Countertop Installation (10:30 AM-2:00 PM)

The actual countertop installation is methodical and precise. The crew will dry-fit all pieces first, setting countertops in position without adhesive to verify fit, seam alignment, and proper overhang. This is when any necessary adjustments happen—minor trimming, shimming for level, or repositioning to perfect the layout. Once satisfied with dry fit, the crew applies color-matched epoxy or polyester adhesive to seams (if present), carefully aligning sections to create minimal visible separation. For book-matched installations, this phase requires particular attention to maintain symmetrical veining patterns. Seam clamping follows, using specialized equipment that applies pressure while the adhesive cures—this typically takes 15-30 minutes. While seams set, the crew applies construction adhesive to cabinet tops and sets countertops permanently, adding screws or brackets where appropriate for secure attachment. Sink cutout areas receive additional attention; for undermount sinks, the crew will dry-fit your sink to verify proper sizing, make any edge adjustments needed, and prepare the opening for plumber installation. For drop-in sinks, the opening is finished with sealer. Cooktop cutouts are similarly finalized, with silicone bead application around perimeters. This phase generates minimal noise compared to demolition—mostly hand tools and careful positioning rather than power cutting.

Early Afternoon: Finishing and Detailing (2:00-3:30 PM)

With countertops set, the crew shifts to finishing details that transform installation into polished completion. Seams receive final attention—excess adhesive is carefully removed, and the seam area is polished to match surrounding surfaces, rendering the joint nearly invisible in quality installations. Edges are inspected for any chips or imperfections from transportation or installation, with minor issues addressed through professional-grade stone repair compounds in color-matched formulations. The crew applies sealer to natural stone (granite, marble, quartzite)—we use professional-grade impregnating sealers that penetrate the stone and provide 1-2 years of protection. Quartz and porcelain don't require sealing. Backsplash installation happens during this phase if included in your project; the crew will cut pieces to fit, apply them with thinset or construction adhesive, and finish with caulk along edges for clean transitions. All exposed edges receive silicone beads where they meet walls or appliances, creating moisture barriers that prevent water infiltration. For Palm Beach County's humid climate, proper sealing and caulking is essential for long-term performance. The crew will also install any accessories included in your project: trivet holders, utensil dividers, or integrated cutting boards that fit into countertop cutouts.

Late Afternoon: Cleanup and Final Inspection (3:30-4:30 PM)

Professional installation includes thorough cleanup—not just basic tidying but comprehensive restoration of your home to pre-installation condition (minus the old countertops, of course). The crew removes all protective materials from floors, doorways, and work areas. They vacuum stone dust from cabinets, wipe down surfaces, and clean the new countertops with appropriate products. All tools, equipment, and materials are loaded back into the truck, and debris is hauled away—you won't be left with old countertop sections in your driveway. The lead installer will then conduct a detailed walkthrough with you, reviewing installation quality, explaining care and maintenance for your specific material, and addressing any concerns or questions. This is when you should inspect carefully: check seam quality, verify that all edges are smooth and chip-free, confirm that overhang dimensions match your expectations, test that all cutouts are properly sized and finished, and ensure that the stone is level and securely attached. The installer will leave care instructions, sealer product information (for natural stone), and contact information for post-installation support. We ask clients to sign off on completion only when they're fully satisfied—don't feel pressured to approve installation if you have concerns that need addressing.

Post-Installation: Next Steps and Timeline

While countertops are installed, your kitchen isn't immediately fully functional—additional trades need to complete their work. Your plumber should reconnect sinks, faucets, and dishwasher, typically scheduled for the day after installation to ensure all adhesives have cured fully. For undermount sinks, the plumber will apply plumber's putty or silicone around drain openings and install faucets through pre-drilled holes. If your cooktop requires gas connection, schedule your licensed gas plumber appropriately. Seams and caulking require 24-48 hours to cure fully before exposure to water—avoid using sinks and avoid placing wet items on counters during this period. For natural stone, we recommend waiting 24 hours before using the surface heavily to allow sealer penetration and initial curing. You can place lightweight items immediately, but hold off on rigorous use, cutting directly on surfaces, or subjecting counters to heat until after the first day. Schedule a follow-up inspection 2-4 weeks post-installation if you notice any concerns; occasionally minor issues like slight seam separation or caulk gaps develop as the home settles back to normal humidity and temperature levels after the disruption of installation. At GMFI Stone and Cabinetry, we provide 12-month workmanship warranty covering installation-related issues and remain available for questions and support. Ready to schedule your installation?
